Aphasia - what is it?
Aphasia is a life-changing condition, usually caused by stroke or head injury or other neurological conditions.
Someone with Aphasia may find it very hard or impossible to undertake everyday activities such as shopping, making a telephone call, reading, following a film of joining in a conversation. They may have problems talking, listening, understanding, writing, or using numbers.
It affects each person differently and may be hardly noticeable or very severe. It can also change from day to day or even hour to hour. It is likely to be worse when the person is tired, unwell or under pressure.
People with Aphasia often find all this extremely frustrating! They can suffer loss of status, social contact and financial security. Roles within the family may change, and friendships and close relationships come under great strain. |
